Talk:cpp/language/bit field

From cppreference.com

Hi guys

Before I start nagging I'd like to say thanks for the great work! :)

From the page it wasn't very clear to me what the significance of the type in a bit field is, which led to the following questions on stackoverflow:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/35056179/c-size-of-structure-with-bit-fields

I still don't really get it but it seems to me now there's more to the type than what I understood from the page (or maybe that's all "not really in the standard but almost standard?").

Cheers, Damian

Bit field, bit-field or bitfield. The C and C++ pages differ. The ISO C standard uses a hyphen. In Wikipedia, Bit field wins and the other two are redirects. Linguistically, "bit field" is probably better, but then cornfield vs corn field vs wheat field.

Try not to overthink it. The standard is often inconsistent about this kind of thing, as are many other standards. --Ybab321 (talk) 03:54, 29 March 2023 (PDT)
